An update has been recived today from MBC Environmantal Health Officer. This states that the Environment Agency have taken a number of water samples from the stream and are satisfied that the levels of chromium are now below the Environmental Quality Standard. Sediment samples have been taken in addition for reassurance. All current warning signs will remain in place until the results of the latter are received sometime next week.

This week, volunteers from the churches in Staplehurst will be delivering red collection envelopes for Christian Aid and then calling from house to house for your contributions.

If you give to this cause, please consider completing the Gift Aid form attached to the envelope, which will increase the value of your donation by 25%.

Yesterday (Sunday), a representative from Christian Aid spoke at the morning services at All Saints, the United Reformed Church and Staplehurst Free Church, describing how Christian Aid, working through a local partner organisation, had been able to help people in a remote area of Sierra Leone, which had been devastated by the civil war in that country, to grow more food for themselves, rebuild their village school and plan for the future of their own community.

This all seems to be a bit low key. It is nice to know the EA have made a full report but what are they actually doing to remove the contamination? I have no idea what happens to the drainage across the railway line if any but, apart from the obvious hazard to people, animals etc I would have thought chromic acid would be pretty lethal to plant including the copse at the end of Market Street. Unless something positive is done it could linger for months or years. If the rain continues the contamination will move downstream. If we return to dry conditions the contamination will stay where it is. Is the contaminated water being pumped out and carted away or at least neutralised - and if the latter, with what?

It may well be that EA have it firmly in hand but would be good to know what is being done. I don’t think the chromium ions will go away.

I have just rung Maidstone Borough Council for an update on the DK Holdings leak. Nothing too detailed, just that the Environment Agency have made a full report and that there is significant contamination of Chromic Acid (quite nasty) still in the stream system that travels along the back of Winches Garth and Fishers Road towards the fields in the North.

There is a notice near Fishers Farm to say keep pets and kids away from the stream. I would add that in my opinion they should also completely avoid the woods next to the railway line crossing by Fishers Farm as there seems to be a marked build up in the ponds here - you can tell by the red colour.

No idea as to whether this will be around for weeks or months (or years?) at the moment. I expect MBC will update at some point.

Richard was a much a valued member of this community as a doctor and as a friend
to the community. I knew Richard and his parents (who lived at Sissinghurst) for over 40 years, Richard was the locum for our doctor when I was a child, and in adulthood, he was my locum gp when I was expecting my first child,he was honest, caring and could not have been a better doctor. To this day I remember him being honest and trustworthy, more so than the hospital, my daughter died at five days old,Richard knew there was something wrong. In those days over 30 years ago he understood what was going on. I am glad he has been recognised as a valued member of this village.

Grim news indeed - I was still looking for a new pub after the Bell closed and the choices are rapidly diminishing. Still, once the two supermarkets go up the Railway Tavern will be in the centre of the village - sorry, town - and the King's Head will be a mile away in the hinterland ;-)

I can only imagine what long-term residents of Staplehurst feel about what is happening. I have only been here a few years and am dismayed by the effect that property development - both amateur and professional - is having, particularly the seemingly inexorable (and irreversible) conversion of anything and everything into high-density housing "units".

Part of me wants to issue a "call to arms", a summons to resist, but in my heart I know that the majority of people don't give a toss. We live in a world of wall-to-wall block paving where only short-term personal convenience matters.

When the bulldozers go in to the Village Centre - either to clear it for housing or, more likely, for its replacement by an ersatz, prefab, "more fit for purpose" replacement - then I will truly know that the future lies elsewhere.

Alas The Pride of Kent is now also closed. Last night was the last session, and a jolly good one it was too until the final pint dribbled from the final barrel at around 10pm. I believe it is being converted into flats (surprise, surprise). With no sign of The Bell re-opening it means there is now just one pub, The King's Head, in the centre of the village, plus the Railway Tavern almost a mile away down by the station.

These are indeed bad days for the discerning beer drinker.

For many years Richard was the Volunteer Coordinator and was the friend of all the residents.

A ribbon, placed across the entrance to the gazebo, was cut by Mrs. Shirley Skinner who was accompanied by her daughter Caroline and son Timothy with his partner Karen.
